Hi, my name is Shelby, and this is my story of why I chose adoption with Building Arizona Families, an Arizona pregnancy help center. When I found out I was pregnant, I wasn’t in the best place in my life to raise a child. It would have been selfish to bring a baby into my situation, so I decided to give someone else the opportunity to raise a child.

At first, I was against it. I thought, “I can do this,” but as I weighed my options, it became clear that it wasn’t the smartest thing for me to do. Bringing a baby along on my journey, when I didn’t even know where I was going, just didn’t seem right. I realized it was best to give someone else that chance. Thankfully, Building Arizona Families’ Arizona pregnancy help center helped me every step of the way.

When I made my first call, I felt like I was doing something wrong. But as I got to know the families and the Arizona pregnancy help center agency, I realized that wasn’t the case. The center helped me see the positive side of adoption. They made me feel like what I was doing was purposeful and selfless, rather than wrong.

Being at the Arizona pregnancy help center felt like being with family. They talked to me and made me feel supported, no matter what I was going through—whether it was addiction or anything else. They never judged me. We are already hard enough on ourselves, and the last thing we need is more judgment from others.

This baby deserves a mother and father and didn’t ask to be brought into a difficult situation. As a mom, I had to do what I thought was best for the baby. It’s the most selfless thing you can do because you’re giving that baby a chance to thrive, live, and have a family.

In open adoptions, you can still be in contact with your child. By law, you’re entitled to receive pictures and updates at least twice a year. Some families are even more open and want you to be part of the child’s life, like the family my son is with. They send me pictures all the time and want me to be involved in his life. Adoption is not a bad thing.You’re not giving your baby away; you’re giving your baby a chance to thrive, live, and have a good life.
